Marco5 New member Banned. I thought about playing it, but then I realized that you had to pay Validated User. I've heard both extremes, one is an "inside source" and others are in the beta. Some say it's the second coming, and some say it's another DIKU grindup with flying characters.
I don't know what to believe, so I'm staying comfortably jaded for now. My friend is in the Aion beta; he and his guild PVP server are planning to make the jump over when Aion launches.
I don't know if that's a ringing endorsement for you or not, but there you have it. I will say this; its been out for a while in Korea, so when it launches here, you won't have the normal MMO launch - it should be better and a bit more polished as a result.
I'm not saying it won't be perfect, but it should be relatively smooth sailing. All servers are PVP-enabled, so that might turn some players off. There are designated RvR areas, but also random "rifts" open up between a zone in one realm and a zone in the other.
This means that once you're out of the newbie areas, the area you're doing PvE in might suddenly become a PvP zone with minimal warning. Not as big a potential gankfest as WoW PvP servers, but not for everyone.
Brightfires Inactive Validated User. I'm a beta player My suggestion is to wait for the Open Beta and give it a try yourself. Personally, I'm very much on the fence about the game. It's absolutley gorgeous, but in my opinion the game-play doesn't come anywhere close to living up to either its potential or its marketing. I guess my strongest warning would be, "Don't buy this game because you want to fly". I did play on one of the early beta weekends. It is absolutely stunning, people will be awed at the graphics if they haven't seen them.
It also runs surprisingly well given the graphics quality. You get quests, you level up, at level 10 you get to earn your wings which adds some flying into the mix. It has a touch of DaoC in that world PvP is a big part of the game -- there are some zones which are always flagged for PvP and PvP portals can open into other zones also.
If you like the idea of a prettier anime-styled WoW with more world PvP you could do worse than give it a try. I don't know much about the higher level game, I've also heard that it gets quite grindy and that you need a group to really get anywhere with it but not seen that myself.
I didn't see anything that made me think 'Wow, that's really new,' it just isn't that kind of game. It will be on version 1. In the starting area you will notice that the world isn't as open as WoW's and gives a little less incentive to explore because it focuses you into certain spots to make sure you can do content "in order" and so you don't get lost and overwhelmed.
Also, the game is really polished. The quest lines make sense, the GUI is pretty good some inventory confusions , they have a built in Questhelper type deal if you're familiar with that WoW add on where if you're having trouble finding quest object X for quest giver Y or having trouble remembering who the fuck it was what gave you that quest to steal a bathing nymph's robes, you just click of the hyperlink in the quest text and it pops open with a little flavor text and a "locate" button that will ping your minimap.
So, optional, but there if you need it or get stuck. For certain storyline quests and others, it doesn't work on purpose because you're supposed to find something hidden.
The classes have you starting out as generic build big guy, dps guy, magic dps guy, healer guy and when you get out of the starting area you can decide how to focus, there is a choice of two classes for each starting class templar, gladiator, ranger, assassin, sorcerer, spiritcaller, cleric and chanter. One of the changes is that at level ten when you leave the starting area is when you get your wings and can fly.
This plays a large part of the strategy of the game, though admittedly mostly in PvP. Speaking of which, there is a large focus on PvP for this game comparable to WAR and if you really really really hate fighting other player, you might want to sit this one out. There are no confirmed PvE only servers, an NCwest says they don't plan on adding them.
