Where it stops is the big question. Require fruits and vegetables twice a day? One hour of exercise three times a week? Bloomberg is an arrogant, elitist fascist and the New Yorkers that keep voting him into office are stupid sheep. Neither have an understanding of personal freedom and responsibility. Both think and live the collective and with the people being too dumb to know the difference. The pot calling the kettle black! Sounds like he is listening to a 4th grader. Mayor Bloomberg would better serve New Yorkers as a part time mayor, thus reserving pursuit of his penchant for meddling for his own time.
He would forego some power, true, but in exchange for the opportunity to promote not enforce the global not just general welfare. What next? The more ridiculous and heavy-handed the government becomes, the stronger and more violent the backlash will become. This is simply busibodies needing something to waste time with. Looks like we are now living in a dictatorship. Sad that these are the type leaders that the people vote into office.
It is unbelievable that this is happing in the United States of America. If the people of New York City are too stupid to know what to feed themselves, then they are too stupid to vote. If the government is so hell bent on cutting down on individual sugar intake they could start by restricting the types of food products that can be purchased with goverment issued FOOD STAMPS, no more soda, sport drinks, candy, cakes, cookies, snacks etc.
With over 45 million people on food stamps this would have more of an affect, nationwide, on sugar intake than any other proposal. Can one imagine the feed back on that?????? Bloombergs NYC I will never set foot in again. This is another example of the liberals belief that government can make better decisions than the individual can. More freedom lost! Bread and water for 6 months.
After that he will want a Big Gulp, super size burger, fries, and ice cream. I think its great. These politicians keep trying to micro-manage us to death. Eventually we will put an end to this and take back our individual freedoms. Just another liberal, socialist trying to control people and dictate how others should live.
Where is freedom of choice? Cannot buy a soda over 16 ounces? When will the elites of the world stop trying to regulate the rest of us? What will stop someone from buying 2 16 oz. Is rationing and taxing the air we breathe by next?
If people do not take responsibility for their own diets, so be it! But now, this big government nanny-state wants ALL power over us. We will not put up with a totalitarian state! The higher our politicians elivate to the more stipid their ideas seem to become. If this was the past County administration in Cleveland doing this act, I would say that companies, like Coke, have not paid off key departments or people and are paying the price. It is an old trick used by many city political groups.
Bloomberg should resign from public office because as mayor he should be trying to balance the budget, reduce crime, etc. That the Starbucks drink is worse, is irrelevant. The only thing that matters, here, is that sugar, salt, and smoking bans are ALL an unwarranted infringement on liberty. This is a very slippery slope toward total tyranny! I am really tired of our government trying to direct everything in our lives.
The government is shredding the Constitution. As a senior couple, it is not unusual for us to share a drink or often a meal.
If there is a limitation on the size of drink or meal the cost for us goes up without having an impact on our dietary intake. Another unintended consequence of ill thought-out regulation. Arrogance at its embarrassing extreme. Demeaning at its best. It sucks. It is another intrusion on the individual rights of people and should be thrown in the trash can. No one will stop it! They are all in Cahoots!
Next Martial Law and the UN takeover…. It is happening as I type…. Everybody in N. You might even want to invite this A. This is just the latest example of a Liberal letting his arrogant attitude get in the way of his intelligance. This is not what politicians are elected to do. Case in point, while I do support the use of seatbelts, but I have never believed Government should be allowed to make me wear one.
It is a pity that individuals like Bloomberg get elected to public office. His distorted thinking leads to such nonsense which has negative consequences for everyone.
Tyranny of the Majority. He bought the Majority with his own money. Bloomberg was, is, and always be a left wing nut job. Nanny Bloomberg is a control freak, wether it pertains to guns, smoking, or whatever drink pleases us. Welcome to the pre-revolutionary world of the King of England. Down with the King! It is the right of every citizen to consume what they want, when they want, and in any quantity they want. This proposed ban strikes at the very heart of Liberty.
We have fought and died to insure a system where we have a voice in the creation of the laws that govern us.
It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters. SO they buy two? This proposal is an exercise in legislative overreach, disguised as good intention and doomed to failure.
It appears to me that most people are missing the real Issue. Bloomberg is a Narcissist. Take a look at the guy. Dealing with liberal-control-your-life-socialists is like playing WhackAMole on a grand scale. Up pops one regulation that we swat down and another one pops up behind us. Oh Michelle! What can you expect from a CROOK, Madoff screwed 20, people in ten years, crooked bloomberg is screwing 8 million people a day, over taxation over regulation etc.
He is just emulating his hero Obama. They are both totalitarians at heart, so they act as if they actually have the legitimate authority to act on the idea of the moment — hoping nobody will call them out on their illegal acts.
He is an idiot. No wonder NY has a net loss of residents. There is the comparison of sugar in soda vs sugar in coffee drinks. Its hard to respect someone who be well intentioned, but is unable to first establish the basic facts. Think Socialism. What happens if people buy the Soda Stream? Will he ban the syrup that goes into that or will he say only sugarless can be purchased.
Good luck to the people who are allergic to artificial sugars, that includes me. Mayor Bloomberg is just another run of the mill control freak can you say Liberal? Of course you can. Well, any city that changes their election by-laws to allow a three term mayor gets what they deserve. Forget the proposal. One more stab at government trying to run our lives! For those of you that like government handouts, just wait until you are totally dependent…they will literally tell you how to live your lives!
That fool has nothing better to do than go after soda????? First, fruit juices contain a lot of sugar also and those are being encouraged. Government influence has simply gone too far. They are trying to control our healthcare and tell how to live, including what we can eat or feed our kids and what we can drink. At some point, the population will rise up in real revolt against these elites, and they deserve it. Fredom was beaten into our 19 year old heads, that was what we were serving for.
More controll by the left. First we start off with the soda and then I guess we can outlaw pasta with meat balls, close all pastry shops and pizza—forgetaboutit—— The citizines of New York City deserve everything they sew. They say the fish stinks from the head down, start with the governor the head and the tail the mayor I am trying to be nice and you get everything you deser.
If someone wants a big drink and it is not allowed, they will just buy two of them. This is typical liberal mentality. And do not hold people generally responsibe for their actions. It is idiotic! This is the equivalent of banning the sale of beer, to prevent alcoholism. What an idiot. This is complete idiocy! It would be the equivalent of banning the sale of beer, to help prevent aldoholism. You think the sale of wine and liquor would then skyrocket? These people are complete idiots, or more likely, think we are.
It is another incremental grab at our collective freedoms, which are rapidly disappearing. Starting now!! As an NYC resident, I have witnessed first hand the havoc he has wrought on our city.
This tyrant rules by fiat, and arrogantly attacks and dismisses any criticism of his policies. This man is dangerous. Morons in action. Green coolaide for the huddling masses. Diversions from the real problems created by Bloomberg and his followers. Truly entangling legislation that teaches citizens to ignore laws. Our nation is about individual freedom with responsibility. Do you think it might have something to do with unrestrained power?
A little power begats more power. He thinks sugar is bad. Go figure. Excuse me while get another refill on my 16oz Coke and another order of fries with the burger.
Maybe we should thank the mayor for his unending parade of examples of the kind of meddling, out-of-control government officials that should not be elected or entrusted with power at any level. Another incremental loss of personal freedom.
If you want to stop truly dangerous activities, stop government overspending. Bloomberg should ban Congress if he wants to do something really good for the United States!
Bloomberg is a moron!! I think that there are many more important matters at hand. I think that this is another example of a government that thinks it knows better than the people it is suppose to serve, and it is another step toward a dictorial regime.
The people of New York should feel threaten by this latest attempt to take away from them the right to make their own choices in life. If this is not stopped now the future will bring other retricitons that will further intrude into the lives of our citizens. Mayor Bloomberg is way out of line. Adults are responsible for themselfs! Mayor Bloomberg, your not welcome in Ft.
Myers Florida! This is like using scotchtape to fix a flat tire. Bloomberg is in bed with Michelle Obama trying to cure obesity using the power the voters gave them. Bloomberg is an idiot and should try to find something more important to spend his time with like; decrease the NY city defecit……. Why nit pick? Ban all drinks that contain sugar. Include bottled or canned drinks.
While we are at it, have everyone out for calesthenics at 6AM every morning. If you want to provide free health care, might as well make sure everyone is healthy. Can I hold Mayor Bloomberg accountable if I get in a car wreck? I seldom drink a large Coke or any other drink execept when I go on a long car trip.
The caffeine and sugar keeps me more alert. Perhaps what we need is a little dose of natural consequences. I think this is insanity to the nth degree. With all the problems in that city, he worries about coke.
Give me a break! Bloomberg is a congential Idiot. How he got elected is a mystery now and forever.. It is typical government tryanny and another step to neutralize the will of the people and force them to accept total domination by the government.
But, truth be know, it is the people who vote in Bloomberg, Obama, and all the other socialists. One day there will be no voting to worry about. Bloomberg,Obama, Clinton etc. Obama is always claiming his rights under the Constitution when it serves his purpose, but readily denies the same to others when he disagrees.

And research shows it's actually better for a cat to fall from up high than lower levels. Frank James. Mayor Mike Bloomberg's proposed ban on the sale of supersized sugary fountain drinks in his city made the mayor, at least for some, the epitome of Big Government excess, a place many critics, particularly conservatives, typically reserve for the Obama.
April Fulton. Mayor Bloomberg's proposed ban on large sugary drinks may not slake peoples' thirst for them, or address the obesity problem. A behavioral expert says people who want to buy lots of soda may just rebel at being told what to do.
