I'm so frustrated. I guess maybe it's my first real attempt at playing Hendrix chords and I don't like them, plus I just can't seem to get anything to sound right. I have never struggled with a song like this and man is it frustrating! I have an instructor and we spent a few minutes on it last week and I thought I would just be able to nail it after he left. And then also I have been using Marty Schwartz' lesson on the song and in the past I've learned songs from him so quickly because he is so clear and good.
But for some reason I just can't really tell what he is doing and I just can't get it to sound right. Any advice? Does anyoone else play this song? I can play it with barre chords and make it sound pretty good for sure but trying to play it the way McCready does it has really got me frustrated. How do you guys play it? Any secrets or tricks that I might be missing? Messages 2, OK, I haven't tabbed this out note for note or anything, but the whole thing is an E major blues.
The main "lick" is at the 9thth fret position, and the chords for pretty much the whole song are E, B, A. The little pull-offs you hear on the B and A chords are done with the pinky on the high E string.
On the chords, he's not really strumming them, per se - more like he's playing little fragments of them on the G, B, e off of the bass note on the low E string. Hope that helps. Messages 14, Try usin' the thumb like Jimi. Also muting is important. Messages I agree with all that has been said The basic song is simple but the little touches here and there make it Yellow Ledbetter.
The Marty video is good, but lacks the flow and "smoothness" of the piece. I learn it by watching a lot of the PJ live vids on You Tube. The live versions are always loose and sloppy, but they all have the feel that makes the song. Here is a good one. I practiced that opening riff for a few months before I got it to feel right. Good luck! Getting this song down we lead you right back the Stevie and Jimi There's a lotta tunes that are very similar.
Messages 10, Messages 19, Messages 4, Ribar Member. Yellow Ledbetter has a lot of feel. Dont try to focus on how to play it exactly on record, its going to be tough to "replicate" all the little stuff that takes place.
Learn the chord progression and then the main licks. Slow it down with the licks first and just try to get feel for them, they should feel comfy under your fingers. You really cant force it with this tune, if you playing stiff and holding for your dear life while trying to play this it will come through the music. Play the bar chords with thumb on the bass it will allow you to pull of the licks easier.
Anyway have fun with it, and don't get to frustrated, take a break and come back to it. Its a great song, and you can definitely hear the influence from Hendrix. Look for the tab version with 5 stars.
Davidg Member. I think the thumb or being at least in a posityion where u could use the thumb is a must.
