You're joking, right? It's like for Science class and you use a textbook. You don't go out and do field research for yourself, that's time-consuming and ridiculous because it's already been proven. They give you a general idea, not exactly what you should be doing.
Smogon themselves leave more options underneath the set to help you out to fit what you need. I'll just post a quote I feel is appropriate here. I don't remember the exact user, but it's a forum poster from Serebii: "Smogon isn't 'attacking your creativity'.
They don't have elite forces of ninjas capturing you forcing you to use Scizor. Miss Anne Thrope. Age I'm assuming you've been looking solely at Smogons pages for individual Pokemon.
They have suggested movesets and so on. What you might not know is that Smogon is just trying to show you the most efficient sets for those Pokemon that they've experienced. Most of the website is designed to guide people to win competitive battles. No one is stopping you from being creative with your teams and sets.

Smogon lists strategies for possible use, and if people follow them rigidly just to win I don't really mind, but doesn't that kind of suck the fun out of things? I'm using it to see which Pokemon can be found in the Dream World and which moves they can all learn so I can eventually build a unique team and go fight.
I'd say Smogon is a pretty excellent resource. Please bear in mind though, if you get too disrespectful of the site, this thread may get closed by someone else. We're not too keen on people posting hate about other sites, Pokemon or not. So just remember to keep everything civil. Now, off to Battle Center. At first, I didn't agree with Smogon taking over the competitive battling field of pokemon either..
It's a resource. Nothing more. Personally, I feel like being angry at Smogon for giving trainers a resource to allow anyone to competitively battle is like being mad at a Wiki or FAQ site for giving someone access to all the combined knowledge of the human race.
Just because it's there, doesn't mean it needs to be used.. Even so, if you just use Smogon's movesets and read their guides, that doesn't mean that you've learned everything. Regardless of how much research you do, the real experience is going to come from actually battling. I find Smogon very useful, even though I'm not a part of the actual community.
Smogon is a nice resource because it provides movesets and tier listings and all sorts of other goodies. Personally, I would not want to "do my own research" if I'm just going to come to the same conclusion Smogon would, it's a waste of time. I'd trained one a few weeks before they banned.
Well you know what? Using it anyway. Suck it Smogon, I love you. Other than that it is useful for creating teams, but some of the moves you put on competitive pokemon should be obvious.
If you trained one why bother caring what they say? They have zero say over the wifi rules, and surprisingly to some, the wifi playerbase is times the simulator one. While your arguement does have some validity, you're still being closed-minded.
Smogon themselves may not have any say over offcial Wifi rulings, but if a community, such as say PokeCommunity or Serebii, uses their rules for their tournies and leagues, then you are required to follow said rules even if you're playing on the DS. Because they make troll pages? Nope, you're in the wrong website. Here, 4chan. If you're talking tiers we like to be different. I don't actually dislike smogon but rather the people who use smogon as their pokemon bible, the be all and end all.
I personally don't dislike Smogon maybe because i wasn't on Reborn at the time , usually i use it for reference in team making but i disagree with some of their sets , i even played on showdown for a while but then i got tired of all those arrogant people calling me a noob and other "not very nice" words when they win or ragequit when they don't.
Smogon has more staff to do research. It's like trying to build an F in your garage before a fully equipped production plant can. Sure it's possible, but is it really worth the effort when they already have an excellent system in place that is proven to work and can simply be slightly modified in order to make it more agreeable?
I've wondered this too. Interesting responses hmm, i think i understand better now. Personally I'm a big fan of smogon. I don't feel like any of their decisions on bans are unreasonable or unjustified considering they make their decisions based on facts and statistics rather than base them on opinions.
I do think it's unwise to just copy smogon sets all the time because you really limit yourself and as others have said, smogon doesn't always have the best sets on their website. I don't think Smogon does their job of creating a fair competitive environment perfectly, but they do it better than anyone else who i've seen try. Certainly better than i can do.
I don't like when people complain that their pokemon gets moved to another tier where it belongs. It's not like you can't use that pokemon anymore, just use it in a fair environment. Your mega kangaskan will still perform well in ubers, don't worry. THing is I want to try getting into competive battling since I haven't really done it much. They were a site where I could easily find info and use it to begin to understand what I am doing, I still am a nub lol, but they have at least helped me get my foot in the door.
